How many housing units are there?

Today, the Netherlands has just over 8 million dwellings. Most of these (42 percent) are terraced houses, i.e. houses in a row of at least three joined houses. Thirty-six percent of all dwellings are multi-family homes. These are flats and apartments. Thirteen percent were detached houses and 9 percent semi-detached houses.

The province of Zuid-Holland has the largest number of the 3.4 million terraced housesnoot1 in the Netherlands (688 thousand). These account for 40 percent of homes in this province. Noord-Brabant (563 thousand) and Noord-Holland (518 thousand) also have large proportions of terraced houses.

Few detached houses in Zuid- and Noord-Holland

Multi-family homesnoot2 are most common in both Zuid- and Noord-Holland. They account for more than half of homes in these provinces. Detached housesnoot3 are much scarcer in these provinces (5 and 7 percent respectively). Fryslân and Drenthe have relatively many detached homes: 29 percent in both provinces. These provinces also have relatively many semi-detached housesnoot4 (16 and 18 percent respectively).

A one-family home which is part of a row of at least three houses joined together, in which each house is a separate property. It includes corner houses, terraced houses, but also villas or bungalows when at least three of these are joined together.

A home in the same building as other homes or business units. These include tenements, flats, and apartments with their own front door.

A house that has no conjoining walls with another house or property.

A one-family home joined together with one other one-family home; these are two separate properties.
