Which day has the most birthdays?
The date with most Dutch birthdays is 30 September. In 2023, as many as 44.1 thousand people blew out their birthday candles on the last day of September. September is also the month with the most birthdays (on average 42.7 thousand on each day), followed by May and June. Fewest people celebrate birthdays in December (38.8 thousand per day on average).
Every day of the year, an average of just over 41 thousand people in the Netherlands celebrate their birthday. This number is higher towards the end of September. In addition to 30 September, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 28 and 29 September are all in the top ten dates of birth, which also includes 2 and 3 May. Fewest birthdays (9.7 thousand) fall on leap day, 29 February. 1 January is also unpopular (31.7 thousand birthdays). One reason for this may be that planned births, such as caesarean sections, are less likely to be planned on public holidays. This is probably also the reason that relatively few people have birthdays on Christmas and Boxing Day. If we exclude holidays, fewest people celebrate their birthdays on 2 January (36.2 thousand).
More young people have birthdays in late summer, older people in spring
It is mostly younger people aged up to 25 years who have birthdays in September. Birthdays of over-75s are more likely to fall in March and May. The period in which most babies are born has shifted: most people used to be born in spring, this has now shifted to late summer. Researchers think this may be the result of the contraceptive pill introduced in the 1960s, which made it easier to plan pregnancies. Most couples are said to prefer a spring baby, but do not take into account the fact that it may take time to become pregnant.

Fewer and fewer births on Saturdays and Sundays
Today, fewer babies are born in weekends, more on weekdays. In 2022, 24.4 percent of all babies in the Netherlands were born in a weekend, fifty years ago this was 26.4 percent. In 2022, most babies were born on Fridays and fewest on Mondays. Fewer weekend babies may be the consequence of more mothers opting for hospital births than previously. This may result in more planned births taking place on weekdays as more midwives and other birthing staff are present in hospitals during the week than in weekends.
