How old are motorcyclists and their motorbikes?

Motorcyclists are most often aged between 45 and 65 years old. At the beginning of 2024, almost half of the 684 thousand privately owned motorcycles were registered to someone in this age group. Another 108 thousand motorcycles were owned by someone over the age of 65. The bikes owned by this group also tend to be older: a quarter were 40 years old or older. The 23 thousand motorcyclists aged under 25, on the other hand, were more likely to own newer models.

In 2024, motorcycle ownership had increased across all age groups compared to five years earlier, with the exception of the 45–54 age group. The over-65s in particular are increasingly likely to own a motorcycle: the number of motorcycle owners in this aged group rose from 70 thousand in 2019 to 108 thousand in early 2024. Within this group, 17 thousand bikes were registered to people in the 75–84 age group, up 80 percent compared with five years earlier.

The number of motorcycles owned by young people aged 18–24 years old has also grown in recent years, reaching 23 thousand at the start of 2024. That is up by 30 percent since the start of 2019.
