How many people aged between 67 and 89 are still working?

In 2023, 8 percent of people aged 67 and overnote1 were in paid employment. Although the state pension age was 67 that year, 12 percent of men and 4 percent of women of that age and above were still working. That were 172 thousand men and 57 thousand women.

In relative terms, many people aged 67 and over were self-employed persons without staff (45 percent). Nearly 10 percent of older people in employment had a fixed-term contract. This was much less than among people in employment aged between 55 and 66, at nearly 70 percent.

Mainly part-time

A relatively large number of people aged 67 and over were in flexible employment (36 percent). This means they had a temporary contract, for example, or worked on-call or as temporary workers. People aged 65 and over worked mostly part-time, up to 35 hours per week. Slightly more than half worked less than 20 hours per week, while men worked more hours per week than women.

Most people worked in business and administration

In 2023, both men and women aged 67 were likely to work in occupations related to business and administration. Men were also likely to work in engineering and technology or transport. Women were more likely than men to have jobs in health and welfare, services or to do child-related work.
