How many guests stayed at Dutch campsites?

In 2023, 5.2 million guests stayed overnight on campsites in the Netherlands. That was approximately 4 percent more than in 2022 and in 2019 (the last year before the coronavirus pandemic). The number of foreign campers saw a particularly sharp increase last year.

In 2023, the number of foreign guests staying overnight at Dutch campsites rose by 17 percent to 1.7 million compared to the previous year. The number of campers from the Netherlands was 3.5 million, down by 2 percent compared with 2022.

A lot of guests from neighbouring countries

Approximately a third (1.7 million) of the guests staying at Dutch campsites came from abroad. The largest numbers of foreign guests were from Germany (1.3 million), Belgium (200 thousand) and the United Kingdom (42 thousand). The number of campers from the UK increased by 35 percent, while the number from Germany increased by 16 percent (175 thousand).

More foreign guests at campsites in Limburg

Campsites in Gelderland received the most guests in 2023 (834 thousand), 13 percent more than in 2022. These were mainly guests from the Netherlands.

Zeeland received the most foreign campers (457 thousand). Noord-Holland received 31 percent more foreign campers and the numbers also increased in Gelderland (up by 31 percent) and Limburg (up by 40 percent).

Of all provinces, Limburg saw the largest overall increase in the number of guests (up by 26 percent), while the northern provinces and Utrecht saw a decline.

Guests from the Netherlands stay slightly longer than foreign guests

The total number of overnight stays made by all guests exceeded 28 million in 2023. That was 7 percent more than in 2022. Nearly 75 percent of those overnight stays were made by guests from the Netherlands who stayed one or more nights.

Approximately 8 million nights were made by foreign guests. That was 21 percent more than in the previous year. Dutch people stayed 6 nights, on average, while foreign guests stayed 5 nights.
