How many fast food restaurants are there in the Netherlands?

At the beginning of 2024, there were 19 thousand fast food outlets in the Netherlands. That is over 50 percent more than a decade ago: in 2014, there were over 12.5 thousand.

202419,04012,56020140

In total, there are 37.8 thousand eating places in our country. Just over half of these are fast food outlets, including sandwich shops, food stalls, ice cream parlours and traditional Dutch snack bars. As numbers have grown over the past decade, fast food outlets have come to outnumber traditional restaurants. In 2014, the opposite was true. The number of places to eat has increased steadily since 2014, with the exception of one year: there were slightly fewer places to eat in early 2023 than in early 2022.

20 percent in the four major cities

Most fast food restaurants can be found in densely populated areas. For example, the Netherlands’ four biggest cities combined are home to nearly 20 percent of all fast food outlets. There are 1,560 in Amsterdam, 920 in Rotterdam, 785 in The Hague, and 450 in Utrecht. In order to compare the concentration of fast food outlets, food stalls and ice cream parlours across all municipalities, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) looks at the number of outlets per thousand inhabitants.

On average, there is slightly more than one fast food restaurant per thousand residents in the Netherlands. There are more in municipalities that receive a lot of tourists, with a lot of fast food on offer along the North Sea coast, for example. The Wadden Islands have the most fast food outlets per thousand inhabitants, due to tourism. Fast food outlets are also more common in Zandvoort and the coastal towns of Zeeland. The same applies to Baarle-Nassau and Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg.

In the eastern and north-eastern areas of the Netherlands, the number of fast food outlets per resident is slightly lower than average. Staphorst has the lowest number relative to its population: one fast food outlet per 3 thousand residents. That is about three times lower than the national average.
