How many cars are there?
In 1950, 121 thousand cars were registered in the Netherlands. Even before the Second World War, cars were becoming a popular means of getting around. In spite if this, cars were still considered quite special in 1950, when there were twelve cars per thousand inhabitants. Car numbers started to rise rapidly in the 1960s and 1970s, as more and more people had enough money to buy one.
Cars quickly became cheaper in the 1930s, and production was ramped up. In 1940, at the start of the Second World War, there were just over 98 thousand cars in the Netherlands. By the end of the war, fewer than 11 thousand of these remained. Things soon improved in the Netherlands after the war, and by 1950 the number of cars had risen to 151 thousand. The number topped one million for the first time in 1965. At the beginning of 2023, there were nearly 9 million cars in the Netherlands.
One car for every two people
As the population of the Netherlands also grew in this period, we calculate the number of cars per thousand people as well. In 1945 this was one car per thousand inhabitants. By 1950 this had grown to twelve cars: the number of cars grew much faster than the number of people in the Netherlands. And this continued to be the case: at the beginning of 2023, there were just over 500 cars per thousand inhabitants. This is the equivalent of one car for every two people in the country.

Local jobs
In the 1940s and 1950s people travelled to and from work by bicycle or moped. In 1947, 15 percent of people with a job worked outside the municipality in which they lived. After that, as more and more people owned a car, they also started to live further away from their place of work. In 1960, 27 percent of workers did not work in their municipality of residence. People also used their cars more often for holidays and day trips. The Netherlands witnessed its first traffic jam on Whitsunday 1955.
Cars most popular vehicles
The increase in the number of cars was larger than that for all other types of motor vehicle. In 1950 differences were not substantial: nearly 121 thousand cars, nearly 86 thousand motorcycles and nearly 6 thousand buses. At the beginning of 2023 this had completely changed: nearly 9 million cars, 700 thousand motorcycles and nearly 9 thousand buses.
