Five percent of babies born to 40‑plus mothers
The rising mean age of mothers is part of a long-standing trend: There are increasingly fewer younger mothers and more older mothers. In 2021, 5.9 percent of women who gave birth to a child were younger than 25. This was 9.7 percent in 2000, and in 1970, more than a third of all mothers were still under 25. Almost 5 percent of babies born in 2021 had a mother aged 40 or older. In 2000, that figure was 2.6 percent. That was roughly the same as in 1970 (2.9 percent), but back then 40‑plus mothers were more likely to already have one or more children. In 1970, 7.2 percent of the babies with a 40‑plus mother were first-borns. This was 22.9 percent in 2000, and 26.7 percent in 2021.
Most often, mothers are 30–35 years old at child birth. Before the turn of the century, the majority was still among mothers under 30.
