How many shops are there?

On 1 January 2022, there were 83.8 thousand physical shops in the Netherlands. The largest share of these shops are clothes shops, of which there are 13.7 thousand, which accounts for over 16 percent of all physical shops. Following clothes shops, homeware shops and supermarkets are the next most common shops.

After 2010, the number of shops declined year-on-year, except for a slight increase (0.7 percent) in 2021. Compared to the peak of 97,100 shops in 2010, the Netherlands had over 13 thousand fewer shops in 2022. However, when compared to 1 January 2020, just before the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of physical shops did slightly drop by 0.4 percent.

Especially more food shops

The increase in the number of shops in 2021 was mainly due to the upturn in the food sector (3.4 percent). The number of shops with non-food products remained virtually the same. Bakers and confectioners recorded the highest growth in volume at 4.7 percent. This group is followed by supermarkets and other grocery shops, both increased by 4.4 percent. Bookstores and stationery shops fell the hardest, at 8.1 percent and 7.0 percent respectively. The fall in the number of bookstores in 2021 was greater than in the previous three years combined.
