Fewer visitors due to the coronavirus crisis

Due to the measures to counter the coronavirus crisis, museums were forced to close their doors to the public at different times of the year in 2020, for 16 weeks in total. Even when they were allowed to open their doors again to the public, there were limitations on the number of visitors. In total, Dutch museums attracted 14.4 million visitors that year. This represents a decline by 58 percent on 2019, when 33.9 million people came to visit the museums.

As tourism was also strongly affected by the measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus, the number of foreign visitors decreased by 82 percent; from 10.3 million in 2019 to 1.9 million a year later. The number of domestic visitors almost dropped by half to 12.5 million by 2020.

Lower revenues but also lower costs

The hefty decline in visits has also left its mark on the museums’ 2020 bookkeeping. Their public revenues were €142 million (57 percent) lower than in 2019. Other revenues, such as those from food services and shops, plummeted by €81 million (48 percent).

Savings reduced the overall cost to €979 million, with museums spending €128.5 million (12 percent) less than in 2019. Partly due to the coronavirus support of more than €155 million received by museums in 2020, most museums did not end the financial year with a negative result.

Distance

The Proximity Statistics calculate the average travel distances between persons at inhabited addresses and different facilities, such as general practitioners, libraries and schools. The Proximity Statistics only include facilities within the Netherlands, but for people living in border areas, facilities outside the Netherlands may in fact be closer.

Museums

The population of the Dutch museums is annually established by the Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE). In doing so, it relies on the Museum Register, which lists museums that meet the museum standard on the one hand and the international ICOM definition on the other hand. Non-registered museums are added to the population using the ICOM definition. The Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) applies the following criteria for the assessment of non-registered museums:

  • The museum has a fixed location, is permanently open to the public and is accessible to the public at least 28 weeks a year and three or more days per week;
  • The museum is a non-profit organisation or PBO institution or foundation;
  • The museum has its own collection and conducts research on the collection for the purpose of knowledge dissemination;
  • The museum has a website or can be accessed by reference on a larger platform;

Museums that are not museums according to the stringent rules, but are perceived as such by the public, count as exceptions and are included as museums. These museums are the Hermitage in Amsterdam, Kunsthal KADE in Amersfoort, the Kunsthal Rotterdam and the New Church and the Old Church in Amsterdam.
