Which flower bulbs are most common?
In 2020, Dutch farmers cultivated flower bulbs on 27.1 thousand hectares of land. Cultivation of flower bulbs in the open air in the period 2000–2014 was around 23 thousand ha. The area under cultivation increased by almost 4,000 ha in the years thereafter. This growth has ceased over the last two years. Tulips and lilies are the most commonly grown flower bulbs.
The growth of the acreage after 2015 was due to the expansion of the cultivation of lilies and tulips. The acreage of lilies increased by 1.2 thousand hectares in the period 2015–2018; the area under tulip cultivation even increased by 2.8 thousand hectares. In recent years, the area under tulip cultivation has accounted for about half of the total surface area devoted to flower bulbs. In 2020, the acreage of open-ground tulips increased to 15 thousand ha; 55 percent of the total flower bulb area. Lilies account for one-fifth of the acreage.
Fewer gladioli
The flower bulb sector has been specialising in lilies and tulips for some years now. The acreage of lilies increased from 1.1 thousand ha in 1980 to 5.3 thousand ha in 2020; the acreage of tulips increased from 6.3 thousand ha (1980) to 15 thousand ha (2020). The acreage of gladioli had decreased by two-thirds in 2020 compared to 1980; the acreage of daffodils remained at 1.5 thousand ha.

Bulb farmers
The increase in scale in flower bulb cultivation continues year on year. The number of farms specialised in flower bulb cultivation has decreased by more than 40 percent since 2000; from 2.7 thousand (2000) to 1.5 thousand (2020). The area under bulb cultivation grew from 22.5 thousand ha in 2000 to 27.1 thousand ha in 2020. The average bulb grower now has almost 18 hectares of flower bulbs, which is 2.2 times as much as in 2000.
Bulb-growing areas
Flower bulb cultivation is strongly clustered on a regional basis. More than 1,000 ha of bulbs have been planted in eight municipalities: Den Helder, Hollands Kroon, Schagen, Medemblik, Midden-Drenthe, Noordoostpolder, Noordwijk and Koggenland. The largest continuous bulb-growing area is in the north of the province of Noord-Holland. In 2019, 28 percent of all flower bulbs (acreage) were planted in the municipalities of Hollands Kroon, Schagen and Den Helder, collectively known as the northern bulb region.
Another bulb-growing centre is the dune area west of Haarlem, Kennemerland. Bulb cultivation started there as early as the sixteenth century. Rich merchants from Haarlem and Amsterdam started bulb cultivation on levelled areas of duneland near their estates. A true gardening culture developed there over the course of the sixteenth century, with a leading role for the flower bulb.
Real bulb fever
The bulbs were sought after, scarce and therefore expensive. Bulb merchants were willing to pay a lot of money for them. They would conclude contracts with sellers at inns in Amsterdam, Haarlem, Alkmaar and Enkhuizen. This happened during the winter months, when the bulbs were still in the ground.
The buyer assumed that he would get what had been agreed in the spring. Collateral in the form of capital, as was customary at the time in the forward trading in VOC shares on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, was not required. The tulip trade relied on the trust that buyers and sellers had in each other.
The semper augustus was already sold for 3 thousand guilders in Haarlem in 1625. In February 1637, at the height of the tulip bubble, 4,200 guilders would be paid at auction for a Viceroy and 5,200 guilders for an Admiral van Enchuysen. Shortly thereafter, the market collapsed.
